QUEEN ANNE BURL WALNUT LONG CASE CLOCK, DANIEL QUARE, LONDON. Circa 1710. With month movement (32 days) having two trains – time and strike – seconds dial and calendar aperture within 11-1/4″ silvered chapter ring on finely matted ground, imposed on a 12″ square dial; the seconds dial also silvered; chapter ring marked on inner circle with quarter hours; second marks on outer circle but within five-minute Arabic numerals opposite each Roman numeral hour marking with half-hour ornament engraved within latter markings; blued steel foliated type pierced hour and minute hands; maintaining power arrangement with shutters covering each winding actuated by pull cord inside door; plain seconds hand inscribed with maker’s name at bottom of dial: “Dan Quare London”; all enclosed in long case richly veneered with burl walnut and having narrow herringbone inlay to front and sides; the hood of inverted bell type above a molded cornice enriched with blind fretwork frieze between two brass ball finials; the lower frieze above door also enriched with fretwork as are side panels; the hood door flanked by plain Ionic three-quarter columns at front and quarter-columns at rear; all finished with brass capitals and bases. SIZE: 8’1″ overall h. x 12-3/4″ throat w. x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Arthur S. Vernay Incorporated, New York, New York. From a fine home in Bucksport, Maine. CONDITION: Movement and face professionally restored. Case professionally repolished and restored, with minor losses to fretwork and small areas of molding.
