IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR ERA 34 STAR US FLAG BELONGING TO BRIGADIER GENERAL EDWARD C. MAURAN OF RHODE ISLAND WITH ACCOMPANYING LETTERS AND EPHEMERA. Also known as the “Gettysburg Flag”, as it was the flag in use during the Battle of Gettysburg. This flag became the official flag with the addition of the state of Kansas on July 4th 1861, and was in use until July 4th, 1863. Sewn into the inch and a half hoist having two brass grommets is a two inch white cloth tag with the General’s name “E. C. Mauran.” Also, a stitched one inch square “M”. Thirty-four hand-stitched double appliqued stars. The lot of ephemera includes: 1) 10″ x 8″ Rhode Island newspaper scrapbook. Approximately 50 pages, 1859-1862. 2) 9″ x 7-1/2″ Victorian photo album of 46 cabinet photos, including General & Mrs. Burnside and three men in uniform as well as General Mauran with his wife. 3) 13-1/4″ x 8-1/4″ ledger “Proceedings of the court martial for the trial of Brigadier General Edward C. Mauran 1866.” Sixty-three pages of handwritten text covering 15 days of the proceeding including charges. 4) Binder with material related to Brigadier General Edward C. Mauran including: Cabinet photo of Mauran, two star patches & two buttons, and twenty-five letters and documents from 1863-1873 relating to Rhode Island and Mauran, some on executive stationery. SIZE: Flag: 52″ x 108″. Sizes of ephemera stated above. CONDITION: Flag is in remarkably good condition, showing some minor fraying to edges and small losses displayed in holes and slits.
