FRAMED FOUR LANGUAGE PRESIDENTIAL SHIP’S PASSPORT DOCUMENT BY JAMES MADISON. The printed and handwritten document is set up in four vertical rows with the same text, but in different languages. The document gives permission for Peter H. Raquideau, Commander of the Brig “Two Brothers” to sail between New York and Martinique laden with rice, flour, onions, garden seed and lumber. The document is signed “James Madison”, countersigned by “David Gelston”, who is collector of the customs. Dated August 11, 1809. Also signed by the Secretary of State “A. Smith.” The document has two embossed seals. Housed in a modern gilt frame with blue linen gold edge mat and glass. SIZE: Sight: 16-1/4″ x 19-1/2″. Overall: 27″ x 29-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Collection and shop contents of Linda and the late Vito Peri (owners of the Blue Dolphin Antique Shop, Northport, Maine). CONDITION: Stains at creases on left and right side. Small loss bottom right corner and center hole. Otherwise good. 9-90054 (1,000-2,000)
