BOXED DRY COMPASS, THAXTER CO., BOSTON. Circa 1825. The paper dial with compass points headed by a fleur-de-lis, marked in the center of the dial “THAXTER, State Street, Boston” and mounted within a brass gimbaled bowl, set in the original oak box fitted with a sliding lid. SIZE: Compass: 7″ dia. Box: 6-3/4″ h. x 10″ sq. PROVENANCE: Purported to have been purchased in 1827 by Captain Gray, Bucksport, Maine, for service in his vessel. During the Civil War, Capt. Gray’s vessel, on which this compass was used, was captured and later released by the pirate Simms. The compass remained in the Gray family until it was sold at auction and purchased by the current owner in the 1970s. CONDITION: The dry-mounted compass in functioning condition, the dial legible and clear, the brass casing and mounts corroded but good. The box with good dark patina, dry. 9-94070 (1,200-2,000)
