UNUSUAL SCRIMSHAW SWORDFISH BILL. Second half 19th century. In the form of a ceremonial broadsword with applied carved hilt, the blade a swordfish bill scrimshawed with panels depicting a mounted rider with broad-brimmed hat beneath a floral wreath, above a female bust, above an American displayed eagle on shield and flags, above a robed female with flowing hair beneath a leafy tree, above a clipper ship in full sail; the tip scrimshawed with swordfish, all polychrome heightened. The applied handle with scrolled hilt, spiral twist grip simulating leather, and pierce-carved basket hilt. SIZE: 42-1/2″ overall l. CONDITION: Tip of blade missing three-inch section. Losses to gilding. Half of basket hilt absent. Finish dry overall. Area of scrimshaw in very good condition. Hilt and handle fair. 9-94268 (2,000-3,000)
