SCARCE COLT 2ND MODEL DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 10723. Cal. 44. Very late 2nd Model, one of, if not the last 2nd Models made. All known publications give the serial range for 2nd Model Dragoons to run through about serial number 10,700. Obviously there are no known hard & fast rules when dealing with Colt given the company’s frugal ways in using any and all parts from a particular production run rather than scrapping them. Usual configuration with 7-1/2″ oct to rnd bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line New York City address. Left side of frame is marked “COLTS PATENT” over a tiny “U.S.”. The square back brass trigger guard & back strap contain a 1-pc walnut grip with SN in back strap channel and completely legible “WAT” (William A. Thornton) cartouche on right side and a partially legible cartouche on left side. Various parts have small inspector initials. The 2nd Model Dragoon is the most scarce of the three models and the one usually found showing the hardest use. These sturdy revolvers saw hard military service from their first issue in 1850 right through the Civil War and later on the frontier after they were sold as surplus. Up until the advent of the 44 Magnum in the 1950s the Dragoon held the distinction of being one of the most powerful handguns in the world. CONDITION: Very good, all matching except wedge which is numbered either “566” or 995″. No orig finish remains being an overall very dark brown attic patina with a few scattered spots of rust. Wedge screw is broken which probably accounts for the mismatched wedge. Cyl has matching brown patina and retains about 40-50% Dragoon Indian fight scene. Grip frame retains a medium to dark brass patina. Grip has two large chips from left edge and a chipped right toe with other light handling & use marks, some battering on bottom edges and retains a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with moderate pitting. 4-40543 JR139 (4,000-6,000)
