SCARCE 1ST MODEL DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER. SN 7058. Cal. 44. Usual configuration with 7-1/2″ oct to rnd bbl, altered German silver front sight with a fixed rear sight dovetailed into top flat above forcing cone. Top flat has New York City address, with brackets, reading from cyl to muzzle. Left side of frame has forward marked “COLT’S PATENT” over a tiny “U.S.”. The silver plated square back trigger guard & back strap contain its orig 1-pc walnut grip with last three digits of SN in butt strap channel. Right side of grip has an inlaid mother-of-pearl diamond and the cutout from what was probably an inlaid mother-of-pearl heart. Cyl is usual 6-shots with Dragoon Indian fight scene and the scarce marking “U.S. DRAGOONS / COLT’S PATENT”. Accompanied by a period of use, brown, Slim Jim style holster with sewn-on belt loop on the back and a loop on the front which was probably for the tab of a flap which has been removed. 1st Model Dragoons are rarely encountered and especially in complete orig configuration and are almost never found with orig finish. These heavy revolvers saw hard service with the military from their initial issue in the late 1840s right through the Civil War, usually under harsh conditions with minimal maintenance. These great revolvers remained in service well into the 1870s when they were sold as surplus on the civilian market and re-entered service on frontier during the Indian Wars and the great Westward expansion, again under harsh circumstances with little or no maintenance. CONDITION: Good to very good, all matching including cyl & grip, except wedge which is unnumbered. Bbl retains about 30% orig blue, flaked to a medium/dark patina and showing very heavy wear on left edge of muzzle with a series of dings on right side. Frame & hammer are a plummy/brown patina over dark case colors. Cyl is a medium to dark blue/brown patina with all legends legible and retains 60-70% Dragoon Indian fight scene. Trigger guard & back strap retain 30-35% silver plating with balance a medium mustard patina. Grip is sound showing moderate to heavy wear with light nicks & scratches and retains a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright & shiny bore with scattered pitting. 4-39552 JR140 (8,000-12,000)
