COLT MODEL 1871 OPEN TOP SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. SN 1512. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line block letter address with dashes. Chamber end of bbl has an integral V-notch rear sight. Cyl is usual 6-shots with Ormsby Naval battle scene roll marking and extended front spindle spacer. Left side of frame has 2-line “1871” and “1872” patent dates. Hammer has the offset firing pin to the left side of the hammer secured with two rivets. The brass trigger guard and iron back strap contain a 1-pc ivory grip with very deep relief carved Mexican eagle on the right side that looks original to this revolver. Only about 7,000 of these scarce revolvers were produced in period 1872-1873. The vast majority of these scarce revolvers saw hard and continuous service on the American frontier until they were surplanted by the advent of centerfire cartridges. Subsequently they continued in service in Mexico and South America where they saw even harder service with limited or no maintenance and are frequently found with cut bbls and other major alterations. Given the Mexican eagle grip it is almost certain that this is one of the pieces shipped to Mexico and it retains amazingly strong condition for a Mexican used piece. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very good, all matching including cylinder, wedge & grip are unnumbered. The bbl & bbl lug retain 30-40% glossy orig blue in sheltered areas with balance a plummy brown patina and some fine pitting on left side at muzzle. Frame & hammer retain hints of color case hardening being mostly a dark plum/brown patina. Back strap & butt strap are a dark, dull, blue/brown patina and trigger guard is a light mustard patina. Grip has numerous small & large age lines but is completely sound showing moderate to heavy wear on the eagle and retains a wonderful golden ivory patina. Cyl is a plum brown patina with very fine scattered pitting and retains about 80% Ormsby Naval battle scene. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of light pitting. 4-36850 JR13 (3,000-5,000)
