FINE COLT MODEL 1861 CONVERSION REVOLVER. SN 20983. Cal. 38 CF. Conversion of a civilian revolver returned to factory for that purpose. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ bbl, German silver front sight and 1-line “NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” address with dashes. Left side of frame has “1871” & “1872” patent dates with orig caliber marking on left shoulder of trigger guard. It has usual 6-shot cyl with orig 3-digit SN “359” in its usual place with last three digits of current revolver stamped underneath. Conversion is Richards-Mason style with percussion cyl having been machined to expose all chambers and a conversion ring with exposed spring loading gate installed on recoil shield. Hammer nose is usual conversion with centerfire firing pin retained by two rivets. It has silver plated trigger guard & back strap containing a 1-pc varnished walnut grip with last four digits of SN in back strap channel. The top of back strap, top left of conversion ring & top of bbl are stamped “10”. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only about 2,200 of these revolvers were converted in three styles including orig manufactured revolvers from previously unused & unfinished parts and a small contract for the U.S. Navy and civilian revolvers such as this one. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching except wedge which is properly unnumbered. Bbl retains about 50% glossy orig blue with balance flaked, not worn, to a medium patina. Frame & hammer retain about all of their brilliant orig case colors with recoil shield retaining about 50% colors. Cyl retains 50-60% glossy orig blue with balance flaked to a medium patina and overall retains about 70% Ormsby Naval battle scene. Grip frame retains orig silver in sheltered areas being mostly a medium mustard patina. Grip is sound showing light edge wear with a few minor nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig factory varnish. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-36851 JR23 (5,000-8,000)
