SCARCE COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY CONVERSION REVOLVER. SN 2712. Cal. 38 CF. Blue & color case hardened with 7-1/2″ bbl, German silver front sight and “NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” address with dashes. This revolver was manufactured from previously unused & unfinished ’61 Navy parts with an ejector rod attached to right side of bbl lug and the rammer & rammer stud slots plugged. Rear end of cyl was machined to expose all chambers with a conversion ring that has loading gate with exposed spring attached to recoil shield. Hammer is of the style without exposed rivets securing firing pin. Left side of frame has “1871” and “1872” patent dates and left front web of trigger guard is marked “38 CAL”. Fitted with silver plated steel trigger guard & brass back strap which contain a fine western motif 1-pc ivory grip that has a raised carved ox head on left side and two incised carved brands on right side. SN’s on frame, trigger guard & butt strap are accompanied by a small “1”. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only about 2,200 of these scarce revolvers were produced in mid-1870’s in three styles among which was a small contract for the U.S. Navy, those civilian revolvers returned to factory for conversion and revolvers in this series which were manufactured from previously unused & unfinished 1861 Navy parts. These revolvers usually saw hard service on the American frontier and are rarely found in orig configuration with any orig finish. High condition revolvers are a great rarity. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching except wedge & grip which are unnumbered. Spindle & loading gate have assembly numbers “1210”. Bbl retains 70-75% glossy, dark, orig blue with most of loss areas flaked, not worn, to a light to medium patina. There is one small cleaned area with some very fine pitting on right side of front sight and a lightly cleaned area on bbl lug. Frame & hammer retain virtually all of their orig case colors, turned silver on left recoil shield and about half of loading gate. Balance of case colors are brilliant. Trigger guard retains 80-85% orig silver and back strap 45-50%. Cyl retains about 80% glossy orig blue and about 98% Ormsby Naval battle scene. Grip has numerous age lines & a small repair on top left edge with a light ivory patina and shows moderate wear to edges & carving. Mechanics are fine, very bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of pitting. Altogether a very scarce & beautiful ’61 Navy Conversion. 4-36862 JR24 (6,000-10,000)
