COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY CONVERSION REVOLVER. SN 1257. Cal. 38 RF. Nickel finish with 7-1/2″ oct bbl, pin front sight & 1-line “NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” address with dashes. There is an ejector housing attached to right side of bbl lug with the rammer slot plug. Left side of frame has the “1871” & “1872” patent dates and left shoulder of trigger guard is marked “36 CAL”. Conversion is Richards-Mason style with rear of cyl having been machined away to completely expose the chambers and a commensurate spacer with internal spring loading gate attached to recoil shield . All external numbers are matching with spindle & loading gate assembly numbers “2159”. Mounted with a fine, replacement, 1-pc, smooth ivory grip. Only about 3800 of these scarce revolvers were produced in period of the mid-1870’s from previously unused & unfinished Model 1851 Navy parts. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching except wedge & grip which are unnumbered. Overall retains about all of a fine professionally restored nickel finish. Cyl retains about all of its Ormsby naval battle scene, slightly thinned in a few places during the restoration process. Grip is somewhat shrunken and may be an old period of use replacement, possibly added at time of restoration and retains a fine smooth mellow ivory patina. Wedge spring is broken, otherwise mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore with scattered fine pitting. 4-36889 (3,000-5,000)
