TWO EMBROIDERED SILKWORKS. First quarter 19th century, Massachusetts. The first depicting a maiden in flowing robe standing beside a gate offering flowers to a swan. Beneath a plaque in silvered stitching “Indulgent Fancy! From the fruitful banks of Avon, whence thy rosy fingers cull fresh flowers and dew to sprinkle on the turf where Shakespeare lies.” Beneath which is written within eglomise border, “Wrought by Caroline Eliza Payson at Mrs. Saunders & Miss Beach’s Academy, Dorchester.” Note: Mrs. Judith Saunders and Miss Clementina Beach operated their academy for young ladies form 1803-1834 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Reference the magazine Antiques, November issue 1981 page 1,245. The second a memorial silk work depicting three young women next to the tomb of “CLARISSA” engraved on an urn. The pedestal of which reads “SACRED TO INJURED VIRTURE”. Within an eglomise border. SIZE: Sight: 17-3/4″ x 13-1/2″ and 15″ x 13″. Overall: 21-1/2″ x 17″ and 20-1/2″ 18-1/2″. CONDITION: The first with deterioration to silk foundation. The second with similar deterioration to silk, and with additional darkening to fabric. In both cases, embroidery intact. 9-27711 (700-900)
