SHIP CAPTAIN’S DOCUMENT BOX. Circa 1800, probably Maine. This delicately carved example in Mahogany and pine with rectangular hinged lid with molded edges and string inlay, fitted to a conforming dovetailed box with molded base. Carved and decorated overall, with incised geometric banding, centering elaborate mariner’s compass and fan designs. The edges with satin stringing. The lid fitted with period brass handle. SIZE: 5-3/4″ h x 12-1/2″ l x 6-1/2″ d CONDITION: Very fine original surfaces, with minor and minimal losses to inlay. Overall very good. 9-28498 (1,200-1,600)
