RARE AND OUTSTANDING HAND-CARVED AND PAINTED SCOTER DECOY BY WENDELL GILLEY. Wendell Gilley was a plumber from southwest Harbor, Maine who spent his spare time carving decoys and other decorative carvings which he sold to the local summer trade. His works became extremely popular in the third quarter of the 20th century and of his many admirers were the Rockefeller family, who, after his death, were instrumental in the formation and development of a wonderful museum in Southwest Harbor commemorating Gilley and illustrating a great number of his works. This scoter, with swivel head having carved eyes and slight shaped raised wings retains its original black paint. Attached to the bottom of the decoy is a page about Wendell Gilley himself. This note indicates that while Gilley carved a great number of decorative birds, he very rarely carved decoys and this is one of those rare examples of his decoys. SIZE: 19” l. CONDITION: Generally very good. 9-94632 (4,000-5,000)
