IMPORTANT PHILADELPHIA CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIR. Fourth quarter 18th century. Attributed to the workshop of Eliphalet Chapin. The arched, molded, serpentine crestrail, with central shell-carved element, and upswept molded ears continuing to shaped molded stiles centering a pierce-carved splat with scrolling volutes, joined to the trapezoidal seat frame raised on frontal square legs; the rear legs of tenon construction, shaped, blocked and backswept. All joined by a recessed boxed stretcher. The rear seat rail with astragal arch, the rear stretcher rectangular with incised molded edges. SIZE: h. of back 40″ h. of seat 18″ CONDITION: With old surfaces throughout. Wear to top center of crest rail. Stress cracks on front legs at seat rail. 9-20068 (1,000-1,500)
