AMERICAN SCHOOL SIGNED PORTRAIT OF THE FOLGER FAMILY. (American, First third of the 19th Century) FOLGER FAMILY PORTRAIT. Watercolor on paper folk art portrait shows a seven member family seated in a landscape. The father is seated in a writing arm Windsor pointing to a drawing of a house. The mother is seated in a side chair while the five daughters surround them. One holds a stringed instrument beside her. Presumably the landscape which has a clearing behind them is where they will build their home. Reverse inscribed “Painted year 1818” and “Family name”. Signed indistinctly and dated lower right “A. Hou_et. px”. Below the signature is an altered date of “1884”; the “18” is original, while the “84” is a later addition in pencil which obliterates the original numerals. Presently housed in a hinged tan matte which indicates that on the back of the paper of the original frame it stated Folger Family, Maine 1825. SIZE: 10-1/2″ x 13″. CONDITION: Very fine, with some surface blemishes to gowns of figures lower right facing. 9-90828 (3,500-5,500)
