FINE NEW ENGLAND FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK, PROBABLY MAINE. First quarter 19th century. The case of birch and walnut, inlaid with mahogany veneers. The swan’s neck molded pediment with inlaid pinwheel terminals alternating with brass finials on pediments, the shaped frieze with three bookend inlays above the astragal molded door, string inlaid, flanked by reeded colonnettes with brass capitals and bases, opening to the painted dial with two Arabic chapter rings, centering a subsidiary seconds dial above an arched calendar aperture flanked by time-and-strike apertures, beneath an elliptical curved diorama. Decorated with spandrels depicting songbirds. The brass movement probably English, the iron plate stamped “OSBORNE” (Thomas Osborne, 1800-1842, Birmingham, England). The case cove-molded, the throat headed by three matching bookend inlays, the arched door of figured mahogany with a central inlaid oval panel within string inlay borders, flanked by engaged reeded quarter-columns, joined to the box base with a large circular burled inlaid panel, the whole bounded by contrasting string inlays, raised on ogee bracket feet. Clock has three brass finials, winder, door key, pendulum, and two weights. SIZE: 94″ h. x 13-1/4″ throat w. x 9″ d. PROVENANCE: Although little is known of the origins of this clock, a label is affixed inside the cabinet door giving a biography of the Honorable Enoch Knight, born Sweden, Maine, 1834. He commanded a company of soldiers during the Civil War, returning afterwards to Portland, Maine, to resume his law practice. In 1888, Knight emigrated to Los Angeles, California, where he opened his law office and became active in the community. The clock remained in the family until it was sold at auction in Los Angeles in 1968, where it was purchased by W.R. Channell of Fullerton, California, who recounted the previous history. Also affixed to the inner door is a label from Montgomery Brothers of Los Angeles, California, enumerating charges for repairs and cleaning, Oct. 14, 1901. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Professionally restored, cleaned, and repolished. The dial with old minor professional enhancements. The face with small paint losses along edges and one circular paint loss between the numerals 7 and 8. 9-94276 (6,000-8,000)
