BRITISH VICTORIAN BRASS BALANCE SCALE. Late 19th century. This scale is believed to have come out of a Skowhegan, Maine apothecary. The “14 LB” brass balance scale mounted on a wrought-iron frame above the brass standard on a cast-iron base. Manufactured by “W&T AVERY LTD, BIRMINGHAM”, the suspended brass tray and single weight opposing a porcelain balance tray marked “COOPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY LTD” within an oval cartouche. SIZE: 35-1/2″ h. x 27-1/2″ overall l. PROVENANCE: From a Bangor, ME, collection. CONDITION: Very good overall with original paint, brass tray, a single weight, and porcelain tray. 9-92367 (200-400)
