EXCEPTIONAL TIGER MAPLE CARVED CANDLE BOX. First quarter 18th century, probably New York. This rare wall box nicely carved with highly figured tiger maple. The scrolled crest terminating in a relief carved heart shaped hanger, the sides downsloping and scrolled fitted with an inset sliding cover with scrolled Queen Anne cresting above a pair of pierced “fyflots” above a delicate heart cutout. The box on a molded platform base. SIZE: 18″ h. Overall: 5-1/2″ w x 4-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Constructed with T-head nails and maintaining original dark dry varnished surface. The backboard with early minor grain fissured split, proper right upper corner. Very good overall. 9-28485 (6,000-9,000)
