RARE AMERICAN PAINTED BOX ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH H. DAVIS (ACTIVE 1832-1837). The pine document box with painted lid depicting a mother and daughter seated at opposing ends of a faux-grained table on a patterned rug, framed beneath tasseled drapes. The mother depicted in a red dress holding an instrument in her left hand and looking across the table at her daughter in a blue dress holding a doll. The portrait within a painted blue-black border, the sides and front of the box with dark indigo panels. This fine example attributed to Joseph H. Davis bears a close resemblance to elements in the Charles Caverly family portrait found in the collection of Susan and Raymond Egan, sold by Northeast Auctions, August 5, 2006, Lot 872. While this particular example is lacking any calligraphic inscriptions, there is a very strong comparison between this example and Davis’s documented works in format, color, execution, and subject matter. For other examples similar in composition and subject matter, see a portrait of Two Boys and a Dog, found in the folkart collection of Jon and Rebecca Zoler, sold at Sotheby’s, New York, January 22, 2005, Lot 626; and Portrait of a Mother and Son, sold at Christie’s, New York, January 20, 2005, Lot 333. SIZE: 11″ h. x 28″ l. x 14-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Important Pennsylvania Folk Art Collection. CONDITION: All original surfaces, structurally very good. Shrinkage crack in top lid, with minor paint losses throughout. Very fine overall. 9-93597 (25,000-50,000)
