JEAN BERNARD DESCOMPS (French, 1872-1948) HOLDING UP PEACE THROUGH THE CENTURIES. Impressive and important large bronze figural group shows four 24″ historical French military figures, one from each of the 16th, 17th, 18th & 19th Centuries holding up an oval shield atop which is a 24″ 20th Century military figure holding a peace offering of heather. Each figure is in the appropriate attire of the time and holds the period weapon. The four supporting figures are mounted to a large square naturalistic topped base which is inscribed with the artist’s name. Round foundry mark Cire perdue L. Catti, Foundeur. Also “Épreuve unique cire perdue Mr. Frederic Lachevre” indicating this was a single casting in the lost wax technique for Mr. Frederic Lachevre. Frederic Lachevre was born in 1855 and died in 1943 He was a bibliographer, scholar and literary critic and a French specialist on debauchery. SIZE: 48″ h x 32″ x 31″. Approx. 600 lbs. PROVENANCE: From a fine Texas Estate. CONDITION: Bronze has a wonderful verdigris patina having been outside. 9-22955 (5,000-10,000)
