UNSIGNED (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF JONATHAN HYDE. Unsigned oil on canvas shows a half portrait of an older gentleman with white hair wearing a black suit. The gentleman is seated in a red chair against a brownish background. Housed in a black molded wood frame with gold edge having a plaque “Jonathan Hyde 1772-1850”. Canvas stamp on verso “Hollis & Wheeler, Boston, Mass.” Reference: As described on page 322-324 in the “History of Bath and Environs, Sagadahoc County, Maine: 1607-1894″ by Parker McCobb Reed, Hyde was born in Lebanon, Conn. in 1772. He began his permanent residence in Bath, Maine 1799 where he worked in the retail trade. In 1807, he built the brick store and wharf on Water Street which was taken down in 1886. He was Director in the Lincoln Bank for more than 20 years and died in 1850 at age 78. Also included in this section is a picture of this painting with his signature under it (cropped to an oval form). SIZE: 30″ x 25″. Overall: 34-1/2″ x 29-1/2”.
