RARE PAINT-DECORATED CARVED CHILD’S ROCKING HORSE. 2nd half 19th century. Believed, by the consignor, to have Shaker origins. The whimsical primitive figure painted overall with rows of polychrome dappling, the head carved with forward-facing ears and open mouth, applied with round brass studs for nostrils and eyes. “Saddle” formed by a U-shaped pommel, the rear of saddle seat a back-sloping flange. The wooden scrolling tail terminating in fluted chiseling simulating hair. The front and rear angular legs joined to bent oak rockers with a central “foot rest” stretcher and also joined at the ends by cylindrical stretchers. The whole decorated with dappled paint in colors of green, mustard and rust red on a black ground. SIZE: 25″ h. x 46-3/4″ l. CONDITION: Structurally very good overall with original painted surfaces, no restoration noted. It appears the horse’s mane is missing. The area between the “pommel” and rear back support also appears to have once contained some form of saddle, now absent. 9-99646 (6,000-8,000)
