FOUR EAGLES APPLIQUE QUILT ON CHEDDAR GROUND, BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1876. Maker unknown. Classic Pennsylvania four-eagle appliqué with four large eagles holding batons in their beaks and a double star in the middle. Beautifully quilted at 10 to 11 stitches per inch in off-white thread. Wings and tails are quilted with lines suggesting feathers, bodies quilted with small clamshells. There is a 2” sawtooth inner border and an 8-3/4” plain border. A feather vine turns the corners in the outer border. Entire background is quilted with a diagonal grid with lines 3/4” apart. Fabrics are all solid colors in turkey red, green, and off-white on a cheddar ground. Batting is very thin cotton, backing is cheddar. Edge finish is front brought to back and hand stitched in 3/8” binding. SIZE: 77-1/2” x 81-1/2”. PROVENANCE: PA Quilt & Textile Museum. CONDITION: Very fine, crisp condition.
