WHIG ROSE QUILT WITH BIRD AND VINE BORDER, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1860. Maker unknown. Nine 23” Whig Rose blocks with stuffed appliqué surrounded by a vine border in cottons of green, double pink, turkey red, cheddar, and dark blue on a white cotton ground. The border has birds, grapes, flowers, and leaves on three sides and a more simple design of leaves and a few tulips sprouting from the vine on the fourth side. All the appliqué is stuffed, with the exception of the birds, stems, and vines. The birds’ eyes and legs are embroidered. Hand quilted with 8 stitches per inch. All motifs are outlined with parallel lines filling in the background; leaves and flowers in the open areas of the border. Batting is very thin cotton with extra added under most appliqués. Separate 1/4” pink binding with a very narrow green piping between the front of the quilt and the edge, with a thin piece of string inside the piping. Solid white cotton back. SIZE: 85” x 85”.
