CHEDDAR APPLIQUE QUILT WITH BIRDS BORDER, BERN TOWNSHIP, BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1880. Wrought by Emma Snyder Filbert (Mrs. William Filbert). Quilt constructed of sixteen Rose appliqué blocks, each 14-3/4” square, with 1” sashing and cornerstones. There is a 9” border with an appliquéd swag. Top of each swag has a branch and a bird with forked tail, twelve birds on each side. Quilted at 8 to 9 stitches per inch. Blocks outlined around and within appliqué. Background squares are quilted 1” from edge, then a diamond connects the four flower motifs. Borders are outlined with scallops that echo the shape of the swags filling in the background space. Background is cheddar; appliqués are green and oxblood. Quilt has a thin cotton batting and a brown and rust print back. The edge is finished in a separate 1/4” hand applied binding. SIZE: 81” x 82”.
