RARE AMERICAN WHIRLIGIG OF A SOLDIER. Mid 19th century. This unique example depicting a soldier in original paint. The cap fashioned with a tin can, the brim of sheet metal. The expressive face with pronounced nose and blue pin head eyes. The rotating arms fashioned from knife blades. Mounted on the soldier’s chest is a rosette signifying a medal. The trousers of painted sail cloth. The boots segmented. Mounted on a turned bell-form finial plinth. SIZE: 25″ h. CONDITION: The figure shows substantial wear and weathering with losses to trousers and cap visor. Loss to 2-1/2″ section at base of plinth. Otherwise very good. 9-20351 (6,000-8,000)
