COLT ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. SN 55898. Cal. 45 Colt. Blue & color case hardened with 5-1/2″ bbl, full front sight and 1-line block letter address. Bottom of bbl, under ejector rod housing has two sets of numbers “116741” and the orig number, very faint, “5075”. Left side of frame has 3-line patent dates and a small “U.S.”. Mounted with 1-pc walnut grip with the faint 4-digit number “2723” in back strap channel. Ejector rod housing is 3rd type with bull’s eye ejector rod head. Trigger guard & back strap are numbered “136326” and cyl is numbered “8379”. Frame is marked with “DFC” (David F. Clark) inspector initials. No other inspector initials were observed except two small “P” proofs on bottom of bbl. Base pin is a more modern replacement. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter which identifies the frame as having been sold to the United States Gov’t. and delivered to the Gov’t inspector at the Colt plant April 28, 1880 in a 100 gun shipment. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains about 85% strong arsenal restored finish with scattered light pitting. Frame retains case colors in forward sheltered areas with balance turned silver with some scattered very fine pin pricks of pitting. Cyl is mostly a blue/brown patina with a couple of small dings. Trigger guard & back strap retain blue in sheltered areas being mostly a silver/gray patina. Grip shows heavy wear, having been cleaned, probably with fine sandpaper or coarse steel wool. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-36868 JR26 (3,500-5,000)
