Correction: We have found another book for this set. It is signed, not annotated and missing it’s cover and is “as is” BOOKS: EIGHT SIGNED BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OF PRESIDENT JOHN ADAMS. Moliere. THE WORKS OF. London: 1748 and 1755. Each volume SIGNED by President Adams and six of the eight dated in Adams hand “1772”. This incomplete set of Moliere (boards loose, detached, and one missing) was presented to Annie F. H. Boyd from an Adams ancestor with inscriptions dated December 1901, Quincy (Mass). Of great historical interest are President Adams annotations on the front paste down and front free fly of Volume 1. Common to the signatures and legible annotations is the beautiful time toned bronzed brown ink. The annotations are predominately in French and constitute Adams musings of various uses and meanings of words as they relate to alternative translations of philosophical thought which he finds quite frustrating i.e. the diverse meanings of words such as “high and low” “inside and out”, etc. The nuances of the French words for “yes” and “thus” are also explored. A remarkable offering from the hands of our second President. PROVENANCE: The books were purchased in the 1930’s by the consignor’s family from Annie F. H. Boyd (a descendant of John Adams) and they have never been offered before. CONDITION: As noted above. 9-94122 (20,000-40,000)
