AMERICAN PILOT. Boston: William Norman, 1803. Large folio (two institutional stamps to front paste down) which is a wonderful advertisement for charts, including this edition of the American Pilot for sale by publisher William Norman. Title-page wrinkled, some foxing, time toning, and minor staining and soiling. The Pilot begins with a two-page chart of the COAST OF AMERICA (which is actually the coast of Maine from Wood Island to Grand Harbor). There is insignificant tiny loss to the margin line, page right. The next chart (of one page) is of South Carolina and Georgia with minor water stains. The third chart, of two pages, is of Cape Hateras To Cape Roman. This is apparently taken from Dunbidin. There are also minor water stains to this and the next chart of Nova Scota, also of two pages. Next in order is the two page chart of New Foundland (including Sable and Cape Breton) taken from Des Barres. The large double fold plate of Chesapek Bay and Delaware Bay has slight loss to the lower center fold. This chart includes much of Virginia and Maryland and is taken from the work of local navigators, particularly Anthony Smith. Next is a one page chart of Labradore including the Streights of Bell Isle. The final chart is a tri-fold chart of the West Indies. This was taken from Osgood Carleton (inprinted 1789) who certified the title page (in the type): “Boston, September 10th, 1794.”. The pilot was published according to an Act of Congress. We find no auction records for this edition of the Atlas since 1976. CONDITION: As noted above. 9-93946 (40,000-60,000)
