NICKEL PLATED AINSWORTH COLT CAVALRY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. SN 12201. Cal. 45 Colt. Usual configuration with 7-1/2″ bbl, full nickel finish with full front sight and 1-line script letter address with brackets. Left side of frame has 2-line patent dates and a small “U.S.”. Mounted with 1-pc walnut grip with a clear, sharp “OWA” (Orville W. Ainsworth) cartouche on left side. Right side is not cartouched. Last four digits of SN are barely legible in back strap channel of grip. SNs were observed in usual places on frame, trigger guard & back strap with last four digits of SN on bottom of bbl under ejector rod housing and on outer diameter of cylinder. Base pin is orig type with dimpled ends. Tiny “A” inspector initials were observed on trigger guard, bottom of bbl, top of back strap, cyl & bottom left edge of grip. It has second type ejector rod housing with bull’s eye ejector rod head. While this revolver is not listed by SN it is only five numbers away from #12205 which is listed as an Ainsworth nickel plated revolver on p. 161 of Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers. . .A Continuing Study, Kopec & Fenn. Close examination disclosed no indication that this finish is other than by the factory and careful gauging of the frame & bbl show that it has not been polished. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains 80-85% strong orig nickel with some slight losses around muzzle and some fine pimpling on left side. Ejector rod housing retains traces of orig nickel with balance dark gray patina with scattered pitting. Frame retains 70-75% strong orig nickel with exposed metal on left recoil shield, loading gate & top strap with some very fine pitting on loading gate and right side of top strap. Trigger guard & back strap retain about 65-70% orig nickel. Grip is sound showing light edge wear and a few minor nicks on right side and retains about 50% of a dark finish applied over orig oil finish. Cyl retains traces of orig nickel being mostly a dark gray patina with fine pitting. Hammer is not solid in safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-40640 JR98 (7,000-10,000)
