BRANDED STATE OF MAINE PAINTED SEA CHEST. Second half 19th century. Branded with the name of the owner, C.C. Dame, born 1820. This nice dovetailed example in blue paint. The rectangular hinged lid with a vibrant folk art painting depicting a fully rigged clipper ship approaching a headland in rough seas framed within an oval rope surround, flanked by fanciful mermaids, each cradling a scallop shell depicted within a leafy spray. The interior fitted with a till in which are held the remnants of the original beckets. SIZE: 15-1/4″ h x 43-1/2″ l x 16″ d. PROVENANCE: The brand “C.C. DAME” representing the original owner of this chest. According to 1880 US Census, he then lived in Newburyport, MA as an Internal Revenue Collector. CONDITION: Structurally very good. The exterior paint on lid well worn. The till missing lid. Hinges early replacements. Retains original lock. 9-20342 (4,000-6,000)
