WILLIAM PIERCE STUBBS (American, 1842-1909) PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “MORRIS W. CHILD”. Fine oil on canvas portrait of a black hulled three mast schooner sailing right to left flying US flag, ship flag, company flag and another. The ship’s name emblazoned on the stern. Seven figures on deck. The ship is seen in full sail under a light blue and cloud sky. Off the stern is a sandy bluff with white lighthouse and two buildings. Off bow is a black ocean buoy. Signed lower left “Stubbs”. Housed in a replacement wood frame. The stretched having a Wadsworth Bros. & Howland Boston framing label. SIZE: 22″ x 36″. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of the Master of the ship. CONDITION: Two vertical tears which have been unrestored, one is 2-1/2″ in front sails, the other 5″ left of front mast.
