WILLIAM PIERCE STUBBS (American, 1842-1909) PORTRAIT OF THE “JONATHAN BOURNE”. Large oil on canvas ship portrait of the four-mast black hulled sailing vessel with partial sails up and there are five people on deck. The ship is seen in high wave ocean under dark skies with center area of blue and white sky. Signed lower left “W P Stubbs, 84″. Research indicates that there was a Jonathan Bourne schooner which sailed her maiden voyage from Portland, Maine with a cargo of ice bound for New York. Unfortunately she never made port and it is believed that she is one of the wrecks in Vineyard Sound. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt, gesso decorated frame. SIZE: 26″ x 42”. PROVENANCE: Easton family of Rhode Island. CONDITION: Relined, craquelure, minor inpainting otherwise very good. 9-93295 (8,000-12,000)
