RARE 18TH CENTURY NEWARK SAMPLER. Dated 1799. Wrought with undulating geometric floral border. Decorated overall with trees surmounted with birds, tulips, insects, potted flowers, and trees entwined with snakes. The whole titled “ON FRIENDSHIP”, with the following verse: “TELL ME YE KNOWING AND DISCERNING FEW/ WHERE I MAY FIND A FRIEND WHOS FIRM/WHO DARES STAND BY ME WHEN IN DEEP/ AND THEIR RESOLVE & FRIENDSHIP MOST EXPECTS/ WHO BY A SECRET SYMPATHY CAN SHARE/ MY JOY, MY GRIEF, MY MISERY, MY CARE./ HE MUST BE PRUDENT, FAITHFUL, JUST & WISE/ WHO CAN, TO SUCH A PITCH OF FRIENDSHIP RISE”. Above an octagonal cartouche within which is wrought “MARY/ BURTON/ HER SAMPLER/ FINISHED IN/ THE FOURTE/ ENTH YEAR/ OF HER AGE/ 1799”. A single line above the lower floral border is embroidered, “E GIRTON GOVERNESS NEWARK”. SIZE: Sampler: 16-3/4″ x 13-3/4″. Overall: 21″ x 18″. CONDITION: With overall even fading, and with spot insect damage to linen foundation. With areas of minor toning to edge of sampler, left side facing, otherwise in fine condition. Mounted on early, if not original stretcher. Stretcher now with later cardboard backing housed in a gilt gold frame 9-28474 (2,000-3,000)
