RARE EARLY AMERICAN SILVER BEAKER. Circa 1741, John Burt (1692/93-1745/46), Boston, Massachusetts. Of cylindrical tapering form with everted rim and inverted foot, continuing to a molded and stepped circular foot rim. The hallmark of “JOHN BURT” on the side beneath the rim. Engraved “The Gift of Mr. Roland Cotton to the first Church of Christ in Woburn 1741. Weight: 6.9 troy ounces. SIZE: 5-1/2″ H. PROVENANCE: Property of First Church, Congregational, Woburn, Massachusetts. Reference: On loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts circa 1910 for the exhibition of 1911. See “American church silver of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries” compiled by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, item number 132, p.16. CONDITION: The beaker with light surface scratches and multiple small creases and dimples throughout. No damages or restoration noted. Engraving clear, hallmark with considerable wear.
