RARE EARLY AMERICAN TWO HANDLED SILVER CUP. Circa 1726, George Hanners, Sr. (1696-1740), Boston, Massachusetts. Of tapered cylindrical form with everted rim with C-scrolled handles with outturned thumb grips, beading, and C-scroll terminals, tapering to a molded foot. At the center of the base is the hallmark “GHANNERS” within a rectangle. The side engraved “The Gift of Coll. Eleazer Flegg/to the First Church in Woborn 1726”. Weight: 13.8 troy ounces. SIZE: 5″ H x 5″ D. PROVENANCE: Property of First Church, Congregational, Woburn, Massachusetts. Reference: On loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts circa 1910 for the exhibition of 1911. See “American church silver of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries” compiled by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, item number 546, p.63, and with illustration. CONDITION: Cup with very light surface scratches. Also with minor dimples commensurate with age. Engraving and hallmark remain clear. No restorations or damages noted.
