ATTRIBUTED TO SANFORD ROBINSON GIFFORD (American, 1823-1880) PANORAMIC NEW ENGLAND LANDSCAPE. Oil on wood panel, possibly of Squam Lake, New Hampshire, shows two figures walking toward a saltbox style house overlooking a large lake with inlets and islands. Beyond is a tall mountain with clouds and blue sky. The nearby fields having haystacks and wood borders. Signed lower left “S. R. Gifford 58”. Housed in a period gesso decorated regilt frame with regilt liner. Possibly a study for a larger work and there is some debate as to whether the figures and details to the foreground were added at a later date. SIZE: 6-3/4″ x 13″. CONDITION: Very good, small vertical crack where panel has knot. 9-96302 (15,000-25,000)
