NEW ENGLAND FEDERAL MAHOGANY INLAID CARD TABLE BRANDED “W. RICE”. Circa 1800, probably Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Rectangular D-form top with inset corners, the edges with contrasting double string inlays above conforming frieze of figured mahogany panels, each square tapered leg headed with an oval fan inlaid patera, the legs with oval string inlays. The swing rail is clearly branded “W. Rice” (see provenance). SIZE: 28-1/2″ h x 35-1/4″ w x 17-3/4″ d. PROVENANCE: William Rice (1767-1851). Ship captain, ship owner, privateer, and merchant; owned much Portsmouth real estate; imported goods from Europe and the Caribbean; wife Abby (1773-1812); second wife Emily P. Rice, who outlived him; owned a house on Deer St.; member of the Friendly Fire Society and the Portsmouth Anthenaeum. Hosted a “Calico Party” in 1814, where ladies were invited to cut dress patterns from bales of fabric that Capt. Rice captured from the British.
