PORTHOUSE & FRENCH TWO-DAY CHRONOMETER. Third quarter 19th century, English. Fine example with silvered dial engraved “Porthouse & French” makers to the Admiralty, 16. Northampton St., London in brass case on gimbal fitted in its original mahogany box within a velvet lined mahogany traveling case with leather straps. Note: Serial number 773177 is matching; chronometer and case. Accompanied by maintenance record from 1919, the US Branch Hydrographic Office, Savannah, Georgia. Thomas Porthouse is recorded at 16 Northampton Square 1840-1864. French joined him circa 1864. SIZE: Chronometer: 2-3/4″ h x 4-3/4″ dia. Inside case: 7-1/2″ h x 7″ square. Outside case: 9-1/4″ h x 9-1/2″ square. CONDITION: Dial, brass case and mahogany cases with original surfaces. Chronograph is now off its original gimbal for transportation. Top of one screw detached. Upon inspection, movement appears operational. 9-24819 (5,000-7,000)
