UNSIGNED (American, Last half of the 19th Century) FLEEING THE BURNING SHIP. Large oil on canvas nautical scene shows a ship burning with part of its main mast beside under a moonlit sky. Two lifeboats have left the ship, one in the foreground with six figures, another beyond also with six figures. Wreckage is strewn throughout the ocean. Dated bottom left with what appears to be “1888”. This painting may be the work of James Emery (American, 1819-1899) depicting a ship lost off the Maine coast. Housed in a modern gilt molded wood frame. SIZE: 30-1/2″ x 42-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Originally from a prominent Portland, Maine area collection. CONDITION: The painting has been cut and placed on its original or old stretcher, missing possibly 1″ around which probably included the signature. Edges with losses, there is a consistent light flecking which may have been the result of something used to cover the painting, which when removed it left some fibers and pulled at the surface, with some losses. Otherwise good. 9-24742 (2,500-4,000)
