RARE TYPE 1 REMINGTON SPLIT BREECH SADDLE RING ROLLING BLOCK CARBINE. SN 4044. Cal. 46 RF. Rare carbine with 20″ tapered rnd bbl, pinched blade front sight and 2-position carbine flip rear sight. Top tang has 2-line address & patent number and a small “D” inspector initial. Receiver has a sling bar & ring in left side. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with short, tapered, rounded forearm secured with a sgl band with spring keeper. Buttstock has a straight grip with smooth steel carbine buttplate. The SN was observed on bottom of bbl under hammer spring and was not observed anywhere else on the carbine. The buttplate has the number “3490” in large numbers in old red paint on the inside. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms the U.S. Gov’t contracted for a total of 5,000 of these carbines which were delivered in 1865. In 1870 Remington repurchased 3,600 of them and resold them to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. Undoubtedly the remaining 1,400 carbines were eventually sold to large surplus dealers such as Bannerman’s, also in the 1870s. Given the scarcity of ammunition it is unlikely they would have remained in service very long and would have been relegated to the scrap heap in short order. Very few have apparently been returned to the U.S. from France and therefore these little carbines are extremely rare in the U.S. today. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains 70-75% strong orig blue, turning plum on the front half with scattered surface spots. Frame retains 40-50% faded case colors with balance a silver/gray patina. Stock has a long scrape down left side and a couple of small gouges with a crack in the toe and a gouge on the forearm, otherwise wood is sound with handling & storage marks and retains about all of an old refinish with some orig finish around the wrist. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some light to moderate pitting just in front of chamber. 4-36941 JR234 (4,000-7,000)
