MATHEMATICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS, WATCH MAKERS, GOLD & SILVERSMITHS, LOOKING GLASS MAKERS AND GILDERS SILK TRADE BANNER. Circa 1st half 19th Century. The hanging banner mounted to a round wood dowel with hanging loop having oil painted decoration on both sides with light green later addition yarn fringe. One side with “WE MAKE NO UNJUST REFLECTIONS BUT HOLD THE MIRROR UP TO NATURE.” in black and cream letters having some red and brown shadowing. Statement in a painted gold and yellow frame on a white silk background. The reverse with “THE TRUE MEASURE OF TIME IS BY DEEDS AND NOT BY CENTURIES” in beige lettering with brown shadowing. The center having a silver colored three post hour glass on a white silk background. SIZE: 34″ h x 40″ w. PROVENANCE: Maine Charitable Mechanic Association (Portland, ME). CONDITION: Light wrinkles and creases with some light foxing. Remarkably in very good condition. 9-20476 (5,000-8,000)
