PINE SEA CHEST WITH MERMAID DECORATION. Late 18th – early 19th century. American, Mid-Atlantic region. Rectangular chest with hinged molded lid, interior of which is painted with floral sprigs centering heart. Chest interior in red paint. Dovetail chest in old blue paint, front decorated with two mermaids, each holding flowering branch. Case ends paint-decorated with floral filled urns. Decorations reminiscent of folk art done by the Pennsylvania Dutch. SIZE: 17-1/2″ h x 50″ l x 21-1/4″ d. CONDITION: Lid with extensive wear, iron hinges and lock to damage, lid mounted with three later hinges. Painted surfaces generally very good. 9-24463 (2,500-3,000)
