RARE NO. 1 REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 1978. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Fine sporting rifle in a scarce caliber with 28″ medium weight oct bbl, Remington dovetail front sight with German silver blade & fixed rear sight. Top tang is not configured for a tang sight. Top tang has 2-line Remington address & patent numbers. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with long, tapered rounded forearm with steel schnable tip and shoulders at frame end. Buttstock has a straight grip with raised panels at the frame and has a smooth steel Remington buttplate. SN was observed on bottom tang, bottom of bbl under forearm, right rear face of forearm, left front face of buttstock and inside buttplate. Bottom of bbl has the caliber marking “44 CTG’E” hand stamped forward of the forearm. Top & bottom tangs have the number “22334” on left side under the wood. These rifles were produced in fairly large quantities, as many as 12,000, in the period 1868-1888, however they are rarely found in crisp orig condition such as this one. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching. Bbl retains 95-96% strong orig factory blue with some light cleaned spots on both sides. Receiver retains virtually all of its strong, bright case colors with some lacquer remaining in sheltered areas. Sides are lightly to moderately faded. Top tang retains thin case colors and the bottom tang & trigger bow are mostly gray patina with case colors in sheltered areas. Breech block & hammer retain virtually all of their bright high polish blue and the pin plate retains about all of its bright fire blue. Buttplate retains about 50% bright case colors with balance turned silver showing wear & light pitting at heel & toe. Wood is sound with a very few, very minor handling & storage mars and a small chemical streak around the toe and overall retains about all of its orig factory finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, probably unfired. 4-36929 JR2389 (4,000-7,000)
