BOOT & SHOE-MAKERS SILK TRADE BANNER. Circa 1st half 19th Century. The hanging banner mounted to a round wood dowel with hanging loop having oil painted decoration on both sides with a light green later addition yarn fringe. One side with “HE THAT WILL NOT PAY THE SHOE-MAKER IS NOT WORTHY OF A SOLE.” in black with some red shadowing. The phrase is flanked by two opposing tall boots; one black and cream, the other black. All on a white silk background. The reverse with “SONS OF CRISPIN. SHERMAN, PENDRILL, LEE, GIFFORD, BLOOMFIELD, AND A HOST OF THEIR CRAFT HAVE LABOURED WITH THEIR TO MEND THE SOLES AND IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDINGS OF MANKIND.” in black with some red and green shadowing. A black shoe-makers tool is depicted with a curving point and wooden handle. All against a white silk background. SIZE: 35″ h x 40″ w.
