RARE REMINGTON NO. 1 ROLLING BLOCK CREEDMOOR LONG RANGE SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 5583. Cal. 44 (might be 44-90, 44-100 or 44-105). Fine early Rolling Block target rifle with 34″ oct to rnd bbl, spirit level windgage front sight with broken screw tip, no provision for a rear sight and the tang mounted with a thick sight base containing a 5-1/2″ vernier staff. Bottom of bbl under forearm is stamped with SN and “L.L. HEPBURN” three times in very small letters. Bottom of the round part of the bbl is marked with caliber “44S”. Mounted with very highly figured American claro walnut with scallop checkered, long round forearm with gutta percha tip and shoulders at the frame end. Buttstock has nicely checkered pistol grip with serpentine grip cap that has a triangle ivory schnable inlay and raised shoulders at the frame. Buttplate is diamond checkered Remington hard rubber and it has a heel mount sight base on top of stock. SN was observed on the bottom tang, bottom flat of bbl, rear face of the forearm trunion and right front edge of the buttstock under the wood. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only a few hundred of these fine target rifles were estimated to have been made in the period 1873-1890. This model is one of Remington’s finest target rifles. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine, all matching. Bbl retains about 90% thinning orig blue, stronger in sheltered areas with some very minor spots of pitting on right side just under the forearm. Receiver, bottom tang & trigger guard retain 75-80% case colors turned silver with some dark mottling on the sides of the receiver mixed with very fine pitting. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and retains most of a fine professionally restored finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-36922 JR232 (8,000-12,000)
