BLACKSMITHS SILK TRADE BANNER. Circa 1st half 19th Century. The hanging banner mounted to a round wood dowel with hanging loop having oil painted decoration on both sides with a light green later addition yarn fringe. One side with “STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT” having black letters having red shadowing and yellow letters having red shadowing. Having a large painting of a blacksmith shop with fire, man at anvil with hammer and another assistant with hammer. A banner above having the statement “WHILE THE IRON IS HOT” and above that is “STRIKE”. The bottom having a green and gold highlighted scroll decoration. On a white silk background. The reverse with “TO THIS ARE ALL INDEBTED.” with red and gold letters having black and orange shadowing. The center picture depicting a blacksmith’s arm clutching a heavy hammer on a white silk background. SIZE: 38″ h x 35-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: Maine Charitable Mechanic Association (Portland, ME). CONDITION: Light wrinkling and folds. Some light foxing. Three old 1″ sewn repairs to top edge. In remarkably very good condition. 9-20474 (10,000-15,000)
