REMINGTON NO 3 HEPBURN SPORTING AND TARGET RIFLE. SN 9560. Cal. 38-55; SN9560. Fine Hepburn with 30″ med weight oct bbl, combination front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight without tang sight. Top flat of bbl has usual markings with the caliber marking on the bottom flat of the bbl above the forearm. Bottom flat of bbl, under the forearm, is marked with the SN and caliber. SN was observed in the usual place on the toe of the bottom tang, bottom flat of bbl, front face of butt stock, rear face of the forearm and inside the butt plate. Rifle is mounted with nicely figured slab sawed American walnut with uncheckered forearm that has black insert Schnabel tip and checkered round knob pistol grip stock with Remington smooth steel buttplate. Although these rifles were produced in fairly large quantities, in the period 1883-1907, they are rarely found with high original finish, given their long exposure to outdoor activities which dramatically fades case colors. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine, all matching as noted above. Bbl retains 96-97% strong original factory blue with a few minor nicks about mid point. Exposed post of the combination sight is broken. Receiver retains about all of its strong original case colors, brilliant on the right side, somewhat muted on the left side & turning silver on the top and bottom tangs & trigger guard. Butt plate retains 60-70% faded case colors. Wood is sound with a small scrape on the left side of the buttstock and a few minor nicks & scratches and retains about all of its strong original varnish. Breech block & hammer retain most of their original factory finish. Crisp mechanics, bright shiny bore. 4-39899 JR218 (4,000-6,000)
