EXTREMELY RARE REMINGTON-LEE BOLT ACTION SPORTING RIFLE. SN F76283. Cal. 405 Winchester. One of only less than 500 ever made in the period 1880-1907 with few surviving today. This rifle has a rare 24″ tapered round bbl, Remington dovetailed Rocky Mountain front sight with German silver blade and Remington Semi-Buckhorn rear sight. Top of the bbl, forward of the rear sight has the Remington Arms address with the caliber marking “405W” on the bottom forward of the forestock. Receiver has the Remington Arms name, address and serial number on the top left edge and patent dates through 1887 on the left side. Magazine has 3 grooves on each side. Magazine housing and trigger guard are integral with a Knurled magazine release. It is mounted in a nicely figured 1-pc American walnut stock with slim, tapered forestock that has an ebony insert schnable tip and grasping grooves on each side. Stock has a checkered round knob pistol grip and a smooth steel buttplate with heavy heel. The caliber of the rifle appears to be an uncataloged type, the standard having been 45-70 or 45-90. The bbl is also non-standard in 24″ instead of the standard 28″ or 30″. This rifle certainly lends itself to the old adage that for enough money anything could be ordered from the firearms manufacturers of that era. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains about 75% orig blue, thin over the top, stronger over the bottom with some light rust over the top behind the rear sight. Receiver retains most of a strong orig factory blue with one small spot of pitting and a few scattered spots of pin-prick pitting elsewhere. The left side extractor spring is also lightly pitted. Trigger guard and magazine box retain a medium gray metal patina with blue in sheltered areas. Buttplate has mottled silvered case colors mixed with dark patina. Magazine retains 40-50% thin orig blue, primarily on the left side. Stock has filled sling swivel stud holes in the forestock and buttstock with minor chip around the front of the magazine housing and, overall, retains about all of a fine, professionally-restored finish. Mechanics are crisp with a bright shiny bore. 4-36917 JR266 (4,000-6,000)
